🗓️ Here’s a fun fact about today, May 16th: It's National Sea Monkey Day! Sea monkeys are a type of brine shrimp that were popularized as novelty aquarium pets in the 1960s. They come in kits and are known for their unique ability to enter a state of suspended animation, which allows them to be shipped and stored as eggs until they are ready to be hatched in water. So, if you’ve ever had these little guys as pets or are just fascinated by quirky creatures, today’s the perfect day to celebrate them!

Meet Kai Xue, the 13-year-old trailblazer who became the first person ever to undergo liver surgery for Wild Syndrome, a condition so rare it's only been documented 21 times. Pictured here third from the right, Kai and her mom Ning Chen spent what felt like forever traveling across the UK and China looking for help before finally being referred to Royal Stoke University Hospital in England.
Kai was born with an abnormally swollen left arm due to an unusual lymphatic system, but no one knew why. It turns out, a tiny hole in her liver was causing lymphatic fluid to leak into her abdomen, leading to severe swelling. Dr. Mona Mossad at Royal Stoke, a top expert in lymphatic issues, took on the case. After some initial procedures didn’t help, Dr. Mossad pinpointed the leak to a minuscule hole on Kai’s liver and performed a groundbreaking surgery to seal it. They drained a whopping 7 gallons of lymphatic fluid during the operation, and after five weeks of recovery, Kai was declared healthy. Everyone, including Dr. Yvonne Slater, part of her care team, was thrilled with the success of this pioneering treatment. (Source)
Experimental Cancer Treatment Gives New Jersey Mom a Chance for A Second Baby: ‘I decided to go for it’
Kelly Spill was just 28 years old when she received her cancer diagnosis – credit, Kelly Spill, released
Kelly Spill’s world turned upside down when she was diagnosed with stage-3 colorectal cancer right after giving birth to her first baby, Chase. At just 28, she was dealing with fatigue, bleeding, weight loss, and appetite issues, which were initially dismissed as post-childbirth symptoms. But Kelly had a gut feeling it was something more serious, and she was right. Her biggest fear wasn’t just the cancer; it was that she might never be able to have another child, as she and her husband had always dreamed of having at least three kids.
After seeking treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, she was initially told that the typical treatment options like radiation, chemo, and surgery would likely impact her fertility. However, just before starting chemo, she got a lifeline: she qualified for a clinical trial of a new cancer drug called dostarlimab. This experimental immunotherapy drug offered a less harsh alternative, and after only four treatments, her tumor shrank to half its size. By the ninth treatment, it had completely vanished. Fast forward to July 2023, Kelly gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Mya Grace and remains cancer-free, celebrating her second chance at life and motherhood. (Source)
