🗓️ Hey, did you know that on April 15th, 1912, the Titanic tragically sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage? It's a somber fact, but definitely an interesting piece of history connected to this date.
Airport Keeps Wildlife Away from Runways with Robot Disguised as Predator

In Alaska, where wildlife encounters on airport runways are surprisingly common (there were a whopping 92 animal strikes last year!), the Alaska Department of Transportation (DoT) is getting innovative with their solutions. They're introducing a unique four-legged robotic guard animal, which can cleverly disguise itself as a fox or a coyote, to scare off critters from roaming onto the runways. This isn't the first time the DoT has tried unconventional tactics to keep the runways clear—think pig squads in the '90s and using loud noises, paintball guns, and grape juice drones more recently.
This new robotic addition, affectionately named 'Aurora,' is a Spot model from Boston Dynamics. Aurora will be prowling the runways of Fairbanks Airport, Alaska's second-largest airport, with panels of faux fur to mimic the appearance of a fox or coyote. While Aurora is set to handle birds with ease, the big test will be whether it can intimidate larger creatures like moose or bears. If all goes well, Aurora could become a runway regular, keeping Alaskan airports critter-free at a cool price tag of $70,000. (Source)
Bill Gates Filled a Pothole With Modern Asphalt Made of Carbon–Captured During Clean Hydrogen Process
Bill Gates recently showcased his hands-on approach to fighting climate change by filling a pothole with innovative Modern Asphalt—a road repair material that plays a unique role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Developed by Seattle-based company Modern Hydrogen, in which Gates is an early seed investor, this asphalt is made using a process that strips carbon from natural gas to produce clean hydrogen. Gates emphasized the dual impact of this technology on decarbonizing both the energy and building materials markets, with carbon sequestered from gas being used in the asphalt to construct roads and repair infrastructure.
Modern Hydrogen's strategy, as explained by CEO Tony Pan, leverages existing natural gas infrastructure to deliver decarbonized hydrogen directly to consumers without the need for extensive new infrastructure. This innovative approach circumvents the challenges and costs associated with building clean hydrogen infrastructure, aiming to accelerate the adoption of clean energy solutions. Co-founder and CTO Max Mankin further highlights the potential of their technology for net negative emissions, particularly when applied to carbon-neutral gases like biogas, enabling verifiable carbon capture and utilization in products and materials crucial for achieving climate goals. This groundbreaking work underscores the vital role of innovative technologies in combating climate change on multiple fronts. (Source)
