These chemicals have been around for ages, used in stuff that needs to resist fire, water, stains, or oil. Think waterproof jackets, non-stick pans, and even some types of food packaging. The new EPA action means that water utilities have to start checking for six different types of these chemicals.

It's a big deal because it's expected to make drinking water safer for about 100 million people in the U.S. Plus, there's this hefty $1 billion fund that’s going to help water utilities across the nation pay for the necessary testing and treatment. This is all part of a larger $9 billion boost from the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law aimed at tackling PFAS contamination that’s been a headache for a lot of communities. EPA chief Michael S. Regan said it’s about time to sort out the mess that PFAS has created in many places.
