So get this: one of the biggest meteorites ever found in Michigan was chilling as a doorstop on a local farm for over 80 years before anyone caught on. Mona Sirbescu, a geologist at CMU, got a look at this 22-pound space rock in 2018 when David Mazurek, the farm's owner, got curious about its true nature. Turns out, Mazurek had a gem – dubbed the Edmore meteorite – containing a hefty 12% nickel. The backstory's wild too. The previous farm owner and his dad saw this meteorite crash onto their property in the 1930s, heard a loud thud, and dug it out while it was still warm! Mazurek inherited the rock and used it as a doorstop, sometimes lending it to his kids for show-and-tell. When he realized the potential value, he got it checked out, and, drumroll... sold it for a sweet $75,000 to Michigan State University's Abrams Planetarium.
