In an inspiring turn of events, a British grandad has gone from arm-wrestling novice to one of the world's top arm-wrestlers in just three years. Meet Mark Waldon, a retired civil servant who stumbled upon professional arm wrestling during the lockdown and has now claimed the gold medal at the European Championships, representing Great Britain in the International Federation of Arm Wrestling (IFA).

At the age of 53, Mark embarked on his arm-wrestling journey by researching the sport online. In the beginning, Mark faced some crushing defeats in his first bouts. But after six months, it became clear that he possessed a special talent for arm wrestling. Despite being a lifelong gym-goer, he quickly learned that a strong physique alone wouldn't guarantee success in this sport. Determined to improve, he began training the specific muscles required for arm wrestling and started seeing promising results.

During the pandemic, Mark battled through COVID-19 and pneumonia, enduring months of illness and uncertainty. While recovering in bed, he stumbled upon videos of arm wrestling and felt a strong desire to pursue it once he regained his health.

"To be able to say now that I'm a European gold medallist feels pretty special! Covid nearly cost me my life, but it made me want to live life to the fullest," shared Mark, reflecting on his journey.

He started competing in national tournaments all over the country and turned professional in May 2021. His winning streak continued, catching the attention of the IFA, who invited him to represent Great Britain on the international arm wrestling team.

Mark joined 30 teammates and competed in the IFA World Competition in France in September 2022, where he achieved an impressive fourth-place finish in the under 105kg category for ages 50-60. He excelled in both the left and right arm competitions. Then, in the IFA European Championships in Finland, Mark secured a gold medal in the right arm competition for the same categories. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw from the left arm bouts due to a training injury.

Mark dedicated his victories to his late father, finding motivation in his memory. His grandkids, Grace and Daniel, are extremely proud of their "Hulk" grandad and celebrate his triumph.
